mm (pronounced “millimeter”) was created by SOVO// Projects to support passionately experimental filmmakers who explore and expand the expressive potential of films on film, including 16mm, Super8, and VHS formats. With this initiative, we are seeking to expand our diverse collective of independent artists to welcome both internationally eminent and emerging filmmakers whose creative projects interpret the eccentricities of human existence and cultural difference through moving images and sounds.

mm supports filmmakers each step of the way. Phase I includes research and development, writing, and budgeting, followed by marketing and fundraising. After the film is fully funded, it enters Phase II, where filmmakers will receive support from pre-production all the way through to post-production. mm also assists filmmakers with licensing, distribution and promotion.

Committed to sharing resources, educating our members, and providing a platform for unconventional work, mm challenges contemporary cinematic forms and urges filmmakers to take on new roles and learn new skills, all while developing their own ideas and talents.

Participation in mm is by application only. We accept proposals for films in any phase of development. To pitch your idea, please fill out the application here. Proposals will be reviewed and accepted according to our availability.

In response to Voicemail No. 005 submitted to the Department of Social Distancing by artist Christos Tejada, mm grabbed a VHS-c camcorder, threw on masks and headed for wide open landscapes, driving across the Mojave Desert and through the Antelope Valley for over 16 hours, to shoot this experimental short film. This film was first exhibited as projection in the street-facing windows of SoLA Contemporary for the month of May 2020.

This short film is Milana Burdette’s visual interpretation of a poem by Jack Parsons, titled The Fool from Songs For The Witch Woman. The music is an original composition by Ken Whiting. We recommend that you listen with a solid sound system or headphones with rich bass. To hear the original voicemail, click here.

mm is proud to introduce its debut short film, STRUCTURE, shot by independent filmmakers on 16mm, Super 8, and VHS formats.

From August to October 2019, film crews accompanied our editorial teams on site-specific shoots throughout the production of Issue 6. Issue 6 investigates architecture and design and was the perfect opportunity to capture visuals of spatial relationships in moving images. The result is a 24 minute long testament to the beauty and range of SOVO//’s creative process. The STRUCTURE film complements and illuminates the print publication; it mirrors the way we move through our built environment, both physically and in the realm of our imagination.
