LOS ANGELES, CA — SOVO// Projects introduces Negative Efforts, a workshop series on alternative processing and experimental printing techniques led by photographer Jack X Proctor. Workshops will take place once a month and will initially be available only to SOVO// artists. If you are an analog photographer interested in participating, but you are not yet a member of the collective, we recommend first joining SOVO// by contacting Creative Director Farida Amar via farida@sovomagazine.com with a link to your portfolio for consideration.

“The analog photographers who joined SOVO// did so seeking personal growth and development. Combine this with the already experimental nature of our published work and this kind of thing becomes a logical next step for SOVO//,” explains Farida. “We’re very excited to be working with Jack X Proctor to provide escapes from daily routine in pursuit of a new technique or skill.”

The alchemy of filmmaking eventually reveals itself to every analog photographer. From processing to printing, our craft demands of us hands on engagement that infuses an image with energy that cannot be seen, but which certainly can be felt. This invisible power combined with fractions of seconds suspended in time is what makes alternative process photography so experimental.

On developing this curriculum with SOVO//, photographer and educator Jack X Proctor says, “This series started off as a list I named Alternative Process Wishlist. Working with SOVO// has allowed me to dream about all the things I would want others to know and things I am thrilled to learn more about.” Learning from each other is at the core of our engagement at SOVO//. Through these workshops, we will explore things we may not have had the opportunity to try on our own, and expand the boundaries of our comfort zones.

The Experimental Analog Series will offer one workshop each month for twenty months starting in September 2020. Each workshop experience in the series is carefully crafted and requires quite a bit of planning, material collection and pre-production. We have announced the first four workshops and will be announcing more as they become available.

All workshops include the film and materials you will need to participate, individually packaged lunches and support coordinating transportation. SOVO// is currently requiring that all participants provide a negative COVID-19 test result and will respect all social distancing guidelines. Click on any of the upcoming workshops listed below to learn more and fill out the linked application form to participate.

Independent art collective SOVO// Projects has been publishing analog photography and producing films on film since 2017. To date, we have printed and exhibited works on 35mm, 116, 120 and 4×5 film, 600 and FP-100c instant film, Super 8, 16mm, VHS and VHS-c. HOW IT WORKS

To participate, click on the workshop listing you are interested in and fill out the linked form to apply. Space is limited and decisions are first based on your ability to meet the experience requirements and then on a first come, first serve basis.

You will be notified of your acceptance within a week of submitting your application. Once a workshop is full, we will begin a wait list. If someone cancels, we will invite the next person on the waitlist to take their place. If a workshop is in high demand, we will consider hosting a second workshop on the same topic at a later date.
